About SWAYAM
SWAYAM is a programme initiated by Government of India and designed to achieve the three cardinal principles of Education Policy viz., access, equity and quality. The objective of this effort is to take the best teaching learning resources to all, including the most disadvantaged. SWAYAM seeks to bridge the digital divide for students who have hitherto remained untouched by the digital revolution and have not been able to join the mainstream of the knowledge economy.

The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) is an initiative by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), launched in 2003 through a collaborative effort of seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)—Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Guwahati, and Roorkee—along with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. The primary objective of NPTEL is to offer high-quality education to learners across the globe by developing web-based and video-based courses in core disciplines of engineering and physical sciences at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as in management studies at the postgraduate level.

In 2014, NPTEL introduced a certification process to provide learners with a tangible credential—certificates awarded by IITs/IISc—recognizing their successful course completion and efforts.
Certification courses are conducted twice annually (January–June and July–December). Enrollment is entirely free, with no prerequisites, age restrictions, or entrance criteria, making the courses universally accessible. Learners can engage with the content anytime, anywhere.
Course participation involves watching expert-led video lectures and completing weekly online assignments within set deadlines. Learners can clarify their doubts by posting queries in dedicated discussion forums, which are actively monitored by course instructors and their academic teams.
At the end of the course, learners have the option to appear for a proctored certification exam for a nominal fee. These exams are conducted in over 200 cities across India in two shifts. Attendance at the designated exam center is mandatory, where identity verification is required. Final scores are calculated with a weightage of 25% from assignments and 75% from the final exam.
